Dance Boxing
Boxing and dancing are no strangers to each other. Just think of what Muhammed Ali was doing in the ring with his opponents when he’d float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
But we took it to a whole other level in one of our Rock Steady Boxing classes at SLS Fitness on Saturday, May 7, 2022, when our wonderful trainer, Susan, asked us to do a little something with our legs while we threw our jabs, hooks and uppercuts.
At first, we started kicking the bags, some of them were little “get to know you” kicks with the toe at the bottom of the bag and others were full on pseudo MMA, Muay Thai kicks aimed at the heart of the bag.
The energy in the room and the beat of the music were infectious and pretty soon it got us moving our hips in rhythm with our feet and hands. It was a sight to behold.
We had just given birth to Dance Boxing for Parkinson’s!
What an amazing form of Parkinson’s therapy. You work your brain, balance, muscles and coordination, while sparking joy and building camaraderie all at once.
At the end of the session we gathered and took a group picture holding our arms up in victory and one of us belted out: Cure Parkinson’s!
Right on, brother!
In the meantime, let’s get together to throw some dance moves and punches to remind ourselves that one of the best ways to remain energized and optimistic when you have a movement disorder like Parkinson’s is to find good company and keep moving.
